Cerebellum

Cerebellum

The cerebellum consists of two cerebellar hemispheres and a median vermis. It is separated from the cerebral hemispheres by the tentorium cerebelli. It is connected to the brain stem by the cerebellar peduncles, of which there are three pairs.

Anatomically it is divided into three lobes:-

  • Flocculonodular lobe
  • Anterior lobe
  • Posterior lobe

Functionally it is divided into three regions. Together, the anterior and posterior lobes are divided into a medial section (spinocerebellum) and lateral section (cerebrocerebellum). This leaves the Flocculonodular lobe (vestibulocerebellum) inferiorly.

  • Vestibulocerebellum (balance and spatial orientation)
  • Spinocerebellum (fine-tuned body movements)
  • Cerebrocerebellum (involved in planning movement, and the conscious assessment of movement)
