Cingulate gyrus
The cingulate gyrus is a fold of the cortex that lies on the medial aspect of the cerebral hemisphere. It is located next to the corpus callosum. It is part of the limbic system and has the following important functions:-
Although initially thought to be simply part of the limbic system it is now considered to have more diverse functions including regulation of pain and social behaviour as well as social behaviour and much more.
The term cingulate is latin for 'belt or 'girdle' which probably owes to the way in which it wraps around the corpus callosum (as can be seen in the image)
- Regulation of aggressive behaviour
- Co-ordinates the response to pain
