Depression (Brown and Harris)
In 1978, Brown and Harris reported the results of a community study of 458 women in the inner London area of Camberwell. The study was concerned with the etiology of depression, and resulted in the elaboration of a model of psychosocial causation of depression.
One aspect of this model was the existence of four 'vulnerability factors' for depressive illness in women. These factors included:-

- Three or more children under the age of 14 at home
- Lack of an intimate relationship with a husband or boyfriend
- Lack of employment outside of the home
- Loss of a mother before the age of 11 years
