Kleine-Levin syndrome

Kleine-Levin syndrome

Kleine-Levin syndrome is a very bizarre condition normally seen in adolescent boys. It typically presents with a greatly increased need for sleep and a tendency to eat any food in sight while awake.

It is also associated with emotional and behavioural problems including irritability and aggression.

The symptoms often appear abruptly, remain for a few days to weeks and then disappear. This is usually followed by a period of normality followed by another episode. This pattern can repeat for years with a gradual reduction of severity over time.

In between episodes, those affected appear to be in perfect health with no evidence of behavioural or physical dysfunction. It is sometimes referred to in the media as 'Sleeping Beauty' syndrome.

The cause is unknown.

Outcome is reported to be good with the majority of people making a full recovery.
