Locked-in syndrome


Locked-in syndrome describes a condition whereby a patient is mute, quadraplegic, bedridden, and totally dependent on thier carers. They are howevere alert and cognitively intact and can communicate by moving their eyes.

It usually results from and infarction of the pons or medulla, usually from an embolus occluding a branch of the basilar artery.
