Cerebral asymmetry
Cerebral asymmetry has been noted in the following:
- anterior transverse temporal (Heschl's) gyrus (part of the temporal lobe)
- planum temporale
N.B: Heschl's gyrus is the anterior border of the planum temporale
Heschl's gyrus contains the primary auditory cortex (Brodmann area 41). It is entirely hidden within the Sylvian fissure, with the planum temporale and superior temporal gyrus located lateral to it.
The planum temporale is the cortical area just posterior to the auditory cortex (Heschl's gyrus) within the Sylvian fissure. It is a triangular region which forms the heart of Wernicke's area, one of the most important functional areas for language.
