Neurotransmitter release
The release of neurotransmitter is triggered by an action potential, which leads to an influx of calcium through voltage dependent calcium selective ion channels. The calcium causes vesicles packed with neurotransmitter to fuse with the synaptic membrane and release the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft.
