Neurotrophins
Neurotrophins are known to play a crucial role in the growth and development of neurons. Disturbances in neurotrphic factors is thought to contribute to some neurodevelopmental aspects of schizophrenia and major depression.
An increase of Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations in cortical areas and a decrease of BDNF in the hippocampus of patients with schizophrenia has been observed (compared to controls). Whereas neurotrophin-3 concentrations of frontal and parietal areas were significantly lower in patients than controls.
