Nucleotides

Nucleotides

The basic unit of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is called the nucleotide which is comprised of the following:-

  • A deoxyribose sugar
  • A phosphate group
  • A nitrogenous base (Guanine, cytosine, adenine, or thymine)

The basic unit of RNA is also the nucleotide which is composed of:-

  • A ribose sugar
  • A phosphate group
  • A nitrogenous base (Guanine, cytosine, adenine, or uracil)

The five nitrogenous bases can be divided into either purines or pyrimidine .

The purine bases are:-

  • Adenine
  • Guanine

The pyrimidine bases are:-

  • Cytosine
  • Thymine
  • Uracil
