Papez circuit
James Papez described a neural pathway in the brain that mediates the process of emotion. It is referred to as the 'Papez circuit' and was one of the first descriptions of the limbic system.
The Papez circuit is bilateral, symmetrical and is located on the medial surface of the brain. It links the cortex to the hypothalamus.
Papez suggested that information about emotion passes through the hippocampus, the mamillary bodies of the hypothalamus, the anterior nucleus of the thalamus, the cingular cortex, the entorhinal cortex and, finally, through the hippocampus again thus forming a circuit.
