Serotonin receptors

Serotonin receptors

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) receptors are mainly G protein receptors with the exception of 5-HT3 which is ligand gated.

Key facts to learn for the exam regarding 5-HT receptors include:-

  • 5-HT3 is ligand gated
  • 5-HT3 is most associated with nausea
  • 5-HT7 is associated with circadian rhythms
  • 5-HT2 stimulation is thought to underlie the effects of insomnia, agitation, and sexual dysfunction associated with SSRI use
