Gross anatomy


The brain can be divided anatomically into various lobes and regions by the many fissures (grooves) on its surface.

Important anatomical landmarks to be aware of include:-

  • The medial longitudinal fissure - this separates the brain into the right and left hemispheres
  • The lateral sulcus (The Sylvian fissure) - this divides the frontal and parietal lobes above from the temporal lobe below
  • The central sulcus (the fissure of Rolando) - this separates the frontal from the parietal lobe
