Gross anatomy
The brain can be divided anatomically into various lobes and regions by the many fissures (grooves) on its surface.

- The medial longitudinal fissure - this separates the brain into the right and left hemispheres
- The lateral sulcus (The Sylvian fissure) - this divides the frontal and parietal lobes above from the temporal lobe below
- The central sulcus (the fissure of Rolando) - this separates the frontal from the parietal lobe
