Primary afferent axons
Primary afferent axons convey information about touch and pain from the surface of the body to the spinal cord and brain. They come in four types:-
All of the A axons are myelinated whereas C fibres are unmyelinated.
A-delta fibres are responsible for the sharp initial pain and the C fibres responsible for the slow, dull, longer lasting, second pain.
- A-alpha (proprioception)
- A-beta (touch)
- A-delta (pain and temperature)
- C (pain, temperature, and itch)
